So…this is obviously so not a food post. BUT, I ran out of eye makeup remover a few days ago. I was going to pick some up at the store the other day when we were grocery shopping, but didn’t see any. I was thinking about it last night and figured that it probably really wouldn’t be that hard to make. I searched online and saw a ton of different recipes. Some were just using straight up olive oil, or a mixture of oils. Baby shampoo…baby oil…witch hazel…vitamin E…castille soap…dish soap…water…jojoba oil…etc.
I settled on making my own combo up of things that I already had in the house. It is a very easy recipe. I just used equal parts of olive oil {but you can use whatever oil you want to}, water and witch hazel and added a capsule of vitamin E oil for good measure. Vitamin E supposedly acts as a natural preservative, so I thought “why not?” I actually wanted to use coconut oil instead of the olive oil, but decided against it because it goes to a solid when under 76 degrees and really didn’t feel like having little chunks in the remover.
I also tried to re-use one of my old eye makeup remover bottles. I tried “sterilizing” it in boiling water. Bad idea. Apparently it is not a high-grade of plastic. Not that I expected it to be, but I thought I would be responsible and try to kill any bacteria that happened to be lingering on/in the bottle. I ended up doing the same thing with a second old bottle. Suprise, suprise…the exact same thing happened, except the plastic melted even faster the second time around! {What is the definition of lunatic? Doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result? Yeah. I learned my lesson.} I ended up using a small mason jar. I think I am going to buy a small plastic bottle with a squirtable end at the store though to avoid having to dip my cotton it, though.
I tried it out right away {and took pictures so you all could see the results}. Sorry, if you are creeped out by the one-eyed pictures…kind of weird, I know, but they do show the results!
If you are looking for a cheaper alternative than the eye makeup remover that you normally buy, why not try out a homemade version? {Especially if you already have some of the ingredients on hand?!} I know it saved me quite a few dollars and I hope it will do the same for you! -Shelley.
