Hummus {super simple recipe in the Ninja Chef blender}

HummusHummus.  Such a simple dish to make with a myriad of possibilities available to doctor it up. Today’s hummus recipe though is pretty basic.  I’ve been making it for years, typically with my immersion blender…which usually ends up taking a bit of effort and being a bit much for the handheld wand (aka – it has had some chunks in the past, although no fault of it’s own).  I was excited to try making this hummus today because I had some homemade tahini sitting in the fridge waiting to be used.  Plus, I was anxious to see how the Ninja Chef blender would handle pureeing up a batch (which it did marvelously by the way).

Today’s hummus recipe includes: chic peas, cumin, garlic, salt, lemon juice, and tahini. It has a bit of olive oil drizzled on and smoked paprika sprinkled on at the very end.  So good.

What I love about hummus is it can be eaten as a snack, or dished up for lunch or dinner with fresh veggies, pretzels, pita, etc.  A big batch can be made and eaten throughout the week for quick and simple meals.

Some people may have an aversion to hummus because of the strong, fresh garlic it has in it.  Many times I will make roasted garlic and use that in lieu of it’s raw, head-strong counterpart.  The roasted garlic gives another depth of flavor and tames down the “bite” that raw garlic can give off.  Try it out to see if you like it!

img_3479 I made a video showing the blending process of the hummus in the Ninja Chef.  I really need to get some sort of holder (besides one of my hands) to keep the camera stationary if I am going to keep making any sort of videos, so be warned.  It isn’t horrible, just not professional by any means.  Also, when I am going through the ingredients list at the beginning I said, “the juice of one lime” (which should have been “lemon”), so please don’t be confused by that.

After everything is pureed together, transfer to a serving dish and dip away!  Whatever is left over, place in a covered container in the fridge and eat within about a week.  Enjoy!

Hummus

  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Print

  • Hummus can be made ahead and stored in the fridge for about a week
  • Serve with fresh vegetables (carrots, celery, sweet peppers, cucumber slices, etc.), pretzels, crackers, pita bread, etc.

Ingredients

  • 2 cans chick peas (garbanzo beans), drained with 1/2 cup liquid reserved (more if needed)
  • 4-6 garlic cloves, peeled
  • 2 Tablespoons tahini (sesame seed paste)
  • Juice of 1 lemon (about 1/4 cup)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • olive oil to drizzle on at the end
  • paprika to sprinkle on at the end

Directions

  1. Open cans of chick peas and drain, reserve 1/2 cup of liquid (more if needed). Peel garlic cloves.  Juice lemon.
  2. To the blender pitcher add: drained chick peas, reserved liquid, garlic, lemon juice, salt, cumin, and tahini.
  3. Secure pitcher lid and lock pitcher into blender base and turn the power on.
  4. On the Ninja Chef “Auto IQ” setting, turn to the “Puree” mode.  Press start.
  5. Use tamper as necessary to push food down into the blades while blending.  If the consistency of the hummus needs to be thinned out a bit, pause blender and add 1 Tablespoon more of liquid at a time, and continue to blend.
  6. When the preset timer has ended, remove pitcher from base and scrape hummus into serving bowl.
  7. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with paprika,  Enjoy!
