Homemade Tahini {made in the Ninja Chef blender}

TahiniThis past week our local grocery store had a sale on bulk bin items. This made a prime time to purchase hulled sesame seeds to make a homemade tahini (sesame seed paste). I was able to purchase about 3 cups of sesame seeds for only $2.50! This was a great deal and I’ll be able to whip up some pretty awesome hummus in the coming weeks with the tahini with I was able to make.

Today I wanted to share with you just how easy it was to make this homemade tahini in The Ninja Chef Duo I recently acquired.

I did toast the sesame seeds slightly in a cast iron skillet, which gives the tahini a nuttier and more in-depth flavor, but it is totally optional and un-toasted seeds can be used.

If you choose to toast the seeds, you’ll just want to make sure the sesame seeds are cooled completely before adding them to the blender to purée. I accomplished this cooling by placing them in a thin layer on a large cookie sheet.

When cooled, place the 3 cups of sesame seeds in the blender pitcher, secure lid, and attach to the blender base and power on the machine.

The “Auto IQ” settings will appear. Select the “Nut Butter” option and press “Start”.

Allow the blending to start and then use the tamper to push down the seeds toward the blade to aid in the emulsification process.

You may pause and add a couple tablespoons of a neutral oil (grapeseed, canola, coconut, etc.) part way through the process to thin out the consistency of the tahini and to aid in the final portion of blending.

Heads up: I’ve never posted a video before, but I suppose there’s a first time for everything! I apologize since this video obviously isn’t professional quality, but wanted to be able to post a demonstration of the tahini-making in the works.

The end result is a super creamy and nutty tahini. Use right away or store in an air-tight container in the fridge and use within a few weeks. Enjoy!
